Multimedia Design majors Edwin Yiing Shii Ti (top) and Benjamin Encarnacion won gold and silver award respectively at the recent Crowbar Awards 2008.

The Crowbar Awards 2008 ceremony held on July 25th at Singapore witnessed the academy graduate in Multimedia Design, 22-year-old Kuching folk Edwin Yiing Shii Ti earn his first Gold Crowbar Awards 2008. His multimedia entry I LOVE DOGS won him a top title under experimental interactive category.

Another Multimedia Design student from The One Academy, Benjamin Encarnacion, joins Edwin on the victory lane and won Silver Crowbar Award 2008. Benjamin makes his winning flash project entry called Silent World, Fate of the Galapagos Penguins 2D Animation under animation category, that featured endangered environment revolved around penguins.

Injecting steroid to passion in Multimedia Design

“Winning the award definitely serves as motivation to push myself further and increases my confidence whenever I am about to try out something new,” Edwin says on what he feels about winning his first Gold Crowbar Award.

When asked about whether studying at The One Academy has changed their passion and interest in the field, Edwin nods enthusiastically, “Studying in The One Academy is like injecting steroid to my passion and interest for design. All I can say is I love Multimedia Design more each day."

His winning entry was a new media installation based on a projector that uses ordinary webcams as human motion detection, where a corresponding virtual dog Bobby was applied at the backend of the project. An interesting fact to note about Edwin; Bobby was his belated pet.

Edwin, who harbors promising talent in creative design since young flourished into international recognition during his 3 years study at The One Academy. One of his group projects on short film ‘Fence’ have won Silver (video category) in Summit Creative Awards, a Gold Award in Horizon Interactive Award, and Excellence Award in JVC Tokyo Video Festival, Japan.

Graduated from the academy April this year, Edwin is currently attached to a multinational advertising agency as an interactive designer.

Stirring the waters of creativity

Benjamin decided to join the competition as he have always wanted to experience what it feels like to partake in a creative annual event, “besides knowing what’s stirring the waters in the creative industry."

His 2D animation winning entry entitled Silent World depicts an endangered environment that revolved around penguins to reflect the theme of the competition in the category. "I infused the penguins with an articulate behavior, to portray that it is us humans responsible for them and that they are the ones trying to save themselves from the wrath of humanity."

On his maiden win of the Singapore Crowbar Awards, Benjamin says, “I am pleased to have participated in helping the One Academy gain international exposure to the world. I hope I can do more in the future and never run out of things to say."

“The learning fundamentals The One Academy grants are the keys to siphon this pot of knowledge and retransform what we already know into something revolutionary when we go out to work some day," said Benjamin, on how studying Multimedia Design has changed his perception on the subject.

“With that, The One Academy is a great stepping stone towards the path of a communication media industry," he added.
