Laughter is an instant holiday
When it comes to a final project that has something to do with health, normally what comes to mind is the usual clichéd ‘Smoking kills’ or ‘don’t take drugs’ advertisement, which is ridiculously overdone. Although a clichéd theme can be twisted in a way to be both memorable and impressive, I wanted to tackle a theme that has been done, but not much yet.

After a few weeks deciding on several themes, I finally came to the conclusion that I will be using laughter as my main theme for this project. Before deciding on the final execution, I’ve lingered on a few ways of presenting, which is not very satisfying. Finally I decided to base my advert design on the quote ‘Laughter is an instant holiday.’ While dwelling on the word instant, I visualized the word’s relations to objects; for example ‘instant’ noodles, ‘instant coffee’, Polaroid cameras (that develops pictures instantly), and decided a wordplay would be neat. Therefore, ‘Laughter is an instant (noodle) holiday.’

For the look of the advert, originally I’ve wanted to photo-manipulate the whole packaging, to make the product different but loyal to the original look, so that it will capture the attention of the viewers. It looks like a brand they’ve seen somewhere on the supermarket shelves (Since this is a Malaysian ministry we’re designing this advert for, I chose to use brands that Malaysians are familiar with.) but actually it wasn’t. However, photo-manipulation is a bit too polished (For I’ve wanted the raw, hand scrawled look) and too tedious to execute convincingly, I chose the other way, by retaining the same color scheme of the product but drawn with little caricatures having fun (Thus, the holiday.) I’ve also added a layer of texture underneath the picture to make it look less polished, more like a note from a colleague written on some old paper found on his cubicle desk.
