The One Academy Comic Art Challenge 2009 Unleashed its Winners
Updated 2010-01-11
Out of 300 entries received for The One Academy's Comic Art Challenge 2009, 11 winners have been selected for category A (secondary school students) and 8 winners for category B (18 years and above). The shortlisted participants had their artworks viewed and judged by the creator of The Storm Warriors, Mr Ma Wing Shing.

The Comic Art Challenge 2009, jointly organized by The One Academy, Sin Chew Daily and Golden Screen Cinemas with Gempak Starz and Comic Fiesta as its event partners, was held in conjunction with the much-anticipated release of The Storm Warriors. The art competition aimed to inspire local artists, both aspiring and professional, to design their own comic hero inspired by Ma Wing Shing’s most popular 'Fung Wan'.

Category A: Secondary School Students

In the prize presentation ceremony of the art competition held at The One Academy in Bandar Sunway, the first three winners of category A (secondary school students) walked away with scholarships to pursue a design education at the academy.

First prize winner, Muhammad Azfar Afif bin Munir, 16 years old, from Penang, won The One Academy Scholarship worth RM30, 000, The Storm Warriors Limited Edition USB Set and a poster autographed by Ma Wing Shing. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Sar Ying Hwei grabbed second place and won herself a scholarship worth RM20,000 and The Storm Warriors Miniature Swords Set. The third prize scholarship worth RM10,000 was won by Teoh Bin Xin, 14 years old.

Eight consolation prize winners won The One Academy scholarships worth RM5,000.00 and The Storm Warriors Exclusive T-Shirt.

Category B: 18 years old and above

Leaw Lie Qi is a 20-year-old art student who tops the category B and won the first prize consisting of a limited edition The Storm Warriors USB Set, a poster autographed by Ma Wing Shing and 10 GSC movie passes.

The second prize went to Lee Chin Horng, who has also won numerous other awards and competitions. "I've been a fan of Ma Wing Shing since young and being a part of this competition is significant to my undying interest for his work," he said.

Oo Chun Hee from Penang was named the third prize winner of the competition. A part-time art teacher, Oo also encourages more young talents to take up the opportunity to participate in competitions and not give up easily. Both Lee and Oo won The Storm Warriors miniature swords set and GSC movie passes. Five consolation prize winners received The Storm Warriors exclusive T-shirt each for their creative efforts.
