Chong Fei Giap’s dream-like art turns heads with his knack for marrying anime characteristics with local elements. This artist’s creative journey to success is nothing short of admirable. In the beginning, his parents had initially disapproved of him venturing into the art & design field as they believed it might not lead him to success, however it was soon apparent that he had a flair for creativity when he won several design competitions in secondary school. He then enrolled at The One Academy where he pursued Illustration. Later on, he returned to his alma mater as a guest lecturer coaching the next generation of brilliant young minds.
Upon graduating, he took on the Art Director role in his graphic design start-up, Running Snail Studio. The studio believed in letting their design skills do the talking as they went on to work with several big names including Petronas, AmBank, Astro, KFC, Panasonic, Lexus, Toyota and more for over eight years.
In 2015, Fei Giap co-founded ‘Loka Made’, a creative brand that creates art and souvenir items infused with local culture with Audrey Chew. From producing postcard series with beautiful art on them, they have expanded over the years and now churn out stickers, magnets, keychains, bookmarks and pop-up cards that are an absolute treat for the eyes! Today, ‘Loka Made’ is a thriving brand that allows passionate artists and designers to reach the public with their exceptional skills and creativity.
At first, he faced ridicule by friends and people around him who mocked him for studying art and design. Some of the negative remarks were that he would find it difficult to earn a living in an industry that is stereotyped as unprofitable. Despite everything, he was thankful and appreciative of his parents who fully supported and provided for him during his time at The One Academy. He pushed through and came out of it simply by being true to himself and keeping in mind his parents’ words, “to become the best player, just do it with all your heart.”
One glance at Fei Giap’s work will tell you that anime art heavily influences his wonderful creations. Growing up, he enjoyed looking at the pictures in Japanese comics, fantasy art and admired Japanese film director Hayao Miyazaki’s work. This has inspired him to create art that combines uniquely Malaysian characteristics with Japanese-style anime resulting in masterpieces enjoyed not only by locals but also others from around the world.
Unfortunately, like most businesses, ‘Loka Made’ was hit with a reduction in sales following the recent Movement Control Order. However, the team persisted and used the time to come up with even more adorable designs for the public. They also have a few collaborations lined up with exciting brands including Wall’s ice cream, Maggi and more headed our way so be sure to keep an eye out for it. We are immensely proud of Chong Fei Giap and his team in striving to uplift the local creative industry even in these trying times and wish him all the best in his future undertakings!
