Animation Case Study by Rhythm & Hues
Updated 2012-09-12

More than 40 over digital animation students attended the animation case study masterclass held by Rhythm & Hues (R&H) at ONE TGV Hall. Held together with the DG EXPO 2012 by Digital Animation department, students was in luck to learn in depth from speaker Nikhil Deshmukh, an animation expert hailed from Rhythm & Hues Mumbai, India.

Skilled in visual effects, Nikhil came to share about the stages of animation; ranging from pre-planning stages right up to block, roughs and of course the final animation. Nikhil Deshmukh is notable for handling popular filmographies such as Yogi Bear, The Golden Compass, The Incredible Hulk, The Wolfman, Land of the Lost, Cirque Du Freak: Vampire’s Assistant, to name a few.

The objective of the masterclass was to ensure that students receive first hand information from the best process of animation. The masterclass enabled them to expand their knowledge in the areas of animation, while the expert Nikhil takes on them on a journey of developing a detailed understanding through the eyes of R&H.

During the masterclass, Nikhil showed various samples of an animation production workflow which begun from the art department, to rigging, background preparation, animation finessing with material & environment, matchmove, compositing and finally, finalising the entire work. He was also generous to show technical examples from some of the featured films so that students are exposed to actual movie hands-on done by professional animators. This gives them a chance to feel involved or at least, deepen their exposure in disciplines that they are already in.

According to Nikhi, it is essential for digital animation students to understand the flow and refine their techniques thoroughly as it would help them prepare themselves to join the lucrative industry. To do this, he encouraged students to utilize their computers as a tool to explore animation and perfect their technical skills rather than to rely on the gadget.

The Rhythm & Hues team is also looking forward for The One Academy students to be part of their team; various opportunities are provided for young animators to start their future such as apprenticeship, programmes for faculties, fresh graduates, and even masterclasse as such. Founded in 1987, Rhythm & Hues believes in empowering artists with great working environment and respect. Rhythm & Hues has several studios located in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai and Hyberabad. It is said that, it possesses a geographical agnostic production pipeline that meant projects and work flow are being segregated among the studios working concurrently.

The studio has won academy awards for their works in movies like Babe, The Golden Compass and more and has recently completed the blockbuster Snow White & the Huntsman. At par with The One Academy’s “Masters Train Masters” philosophy, students who aim to be part of the R&H team are already in for an award-winning chance of a lifetime to learn from the masters themselves.
