Sweii Chong and Ng Man Meng won an Excellence! Award in the New Media Category at the HKDA Awards 07 (Hong Kong Design Association) with their New Media work – ‘OiOiO - The Sound of Orang Hutan’”

Sweii Chong and Ng worked together with Justlife Group Sdn. Bhd. Malaysia to produce ‘OiOiO – The Sound of Orang Hutan’ to participate in the Earth Day event celebrations from 3 April to 19 April 2007 in Ikano Power Centre.

According to the designers, the award-winning work was meant to describe the significant impact of human life on the environment. “Everything that we do, no matter how small it is, has an impact on the environment. This work lets us express that idea and leave the audience with an environmental message,” said Chong, a multi award-winning lecturer from The One Academy.

“We wanted to use a friendly approach to communicate our message to the masses. User-friendliness was key - with high tech features at a low cost,” added Ng, a star Multimedia Design graduate from The One Academy who won the Best Storyboard Award at the TOA Student Creative Awards 2004.

Ng said the project faced multiple challenges. “Our initial concept for the project was on a much larger scale, but it was downsized due to location and budget restrictions. We wanted to create a life-sized tree projection that allowed multiple user interaction but the deadline was not possible.”

“Nevertheless, we’re happy to have won the award. The project by itself was a great experience and the extra award is like a bonus add-on. At the end of the day, a designer’s satisfaction comes from communicating your message to your audience,” added Chong.

For Chong, the award win is a verification that OiOiO is up to industry standard for creative work but the duo has planned to take this project to the next level. According to Ng, “We are currently modifying and altering this project to suit another multinational company in Malaysia. We can’t reveal the details now, but keep your eyes peeled!”

The Hong Kong Design Association was founded in 1972 and is a design body to advocate public interest in design and higher professionalism. The HKDA Awards, organised by the Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA), has been a design excellence in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific for over 30 years and presided by a judging panel of globally respected design icons. It is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary award for professional designs in the fields of graphic, product, spatial and new media.

The theme of the HKDA Awards 07 is "Design. No Junk Food." It is a statement on the value of design, and a trumpet call to all professional designers throughout Asia Pacific - bring forth your works of excellence to this longest-standing platform of acclaiming exceptional design solutions in the region.
